French former president Valéry Giscard d’Estaing has died at the age of 94 as a result of a covid infection on his estate in Authon. He was president of France from 1974 to 1981. As an early version of Macron, he managed to become president as a pro-European center figure. He headed the European Convention for the Future of Europe from March 2002 to July 2003. Under his presidency, a breath of fresh air blew through the country. His presidency was characterized by a more social liberalism. He lowered the voting age to 18 years, he legalized abortion and the mutual consent divorce was also introduced afterwards. He was also responsible for the introduction of the High Speed Train and the use of nuclear energy. He referred to himself as the conservative who also liked change. The center-right liberal was also one of the architects of European unification.
Valéry Giscard D’Estaing was criticized for being too haughty and too distant, pretending to be the aristocrat. It is said to be one of the reasons that he would ultimately not be reelected in the early 1980s. An investigation into him was also opened in May 2020 because of a complaint from a German female reporter. He would have touched her bottom several times during the meeting.
