Het is niet makkelijk om in te schatten of een kind slachtoffer is van kindermishandeling. We spreken over verwaarlozing wanneer ouders of andere opvoedingsverantwoordelijken niet voldoen aan de basisbehoeften voor hun kinderen. Dit zorgt of kan zorgen voor effecten (op korte of lange termijn) zoals nachtmerries, angsten, depressie, schade aan je gezondheid,\u2026 Deze gevolgen kunnen net zo groot zijn als bij mishandeling. Verwaarlozing kan zich op fysiek of emotioneel vlak zijn. Een combinatie van beiden is ook mogelijk. Het is vaak niet een verhaal van kindermishandeling maar een verhaal van ontwrichting van mensen en micro structuren. De stap zetten om een bezorgdheid te melden is vaak groot. Toch is het van essentieel belang voor het kind om zo snel mogelijk hulp te krijgen. Een volwassene die een kind of jongere (jonger dan 18 jaar) pijn doet of verwaarloost, doet aan kindermishandeling. Er bestaan verschillende vormen: lichamelijke mishandeling, lichamelijke verwaarlozing, emotionele verwaarlozing en seksueel misbruik. Het Vertrouwenscentrum Kindermishandeling (VK) is een centrum waar iedereen die ongerust is over een kind of een gezin terecht kan.
